Virtual DBT therapy across New York Wherever you are in the state.
A full DBT program for adults, delivered over secure video anywhere in New York. Individual therapy, a weekly skills group, coaching between sessions, and a consultation team standing behind your therapist. All four parts, run the way the model was designed.
We work with people located anywhere in New York State, from the city to upstate.
Schedule a free consultationA complete program, not just a skills handout.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan for people who feel emotions intensely, respond quickly, and take longer than most to come back down. It teaches specific, trainable skills in four areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
New York has no shortage of therapists. It has far fewer practices running a genuinely adherent DBT program, with all four components in place rather than a therapist who brings some DBT skills into general treatment. That second thing can genuinely help, and it is a different thing. You should know which one you are signing up for.
The four components, delivered virtually across NY.
Each of these is part of how DBT was built to work. We run all four, with the same structure online as in the office.
Individual DBT therapy
Weekly one-to-one sessions over video, using diary cards and chain analysis to work out what drives a pattern and where it can be interrupted.
DBT skills training group
A structured weekly group where you learn and practise the four modules, with a new skill introduced each week and homework in between.
Coaching between sessions
Access to your therapist between appointments for help using a skill at the moment you actually need it. It is provided as part of the comprehensive program rather than billed as an extra.
Therapist consultation team
Our clinicians meet as a team every week. DBT treats the therapist as part of the treatment, so this supports your clinician rather than being something you attend. Every clinician here is on it, including group leaders.
Two adult group times, both on a Tuesday.
We run two adult DBT skills groups, at 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm, both virtual. They cover the same four modules, so you pick the one that fits your evening rather than the one that fits your diagnosis.
Enrollment is rolling, so you start at the beginning of the next module rather than waiting for a fresh cohort to form. We will confirm which group you can join on the consultation call.
Full details of every group we run, including what each one costs, are on the group therapy page.
The full program, or the skills group on its own.
These are two different services, and one is not a lesser version of the other. Which one fits depends on what you are working on, what your safety picture looks like, and whether you already have an individual therapist you want to keep.
| Service | Comprehensive virtual DBT | Standalone virtual DBT skills group |
|---|---|---|
| Individual therapy | Included, weekly, with a DBT-trained therapist here | Not included. You can be in individual therapy elsewhere, or in none at all |
| DBT skills training | Included | This is the whole offering |
| Coaching between sessions | Provided as part of the comprehensive program | Not included |
| Consultation-team support for your clinician | Included | Included. The team supports the therapist, so your group leaders have it too |
| Best suited to | People who want one coordinated program, where the individual work and the skills work inform each other | People who want structured skills practice, often alongside therapy they are already happy with |
If you want to look at either in more detail, read about our comprehensive DBT program or the virtual DBT skills groups and when they meet. If you are not sure which you need, that is a good thing to bring to a consultation call rather than a decision to make on your own.
Built for emotions that hit hard and stay.
DBT was originally developed for borderline personality disorder and remains one of the best-supported treatments for it. The patterns listed here also respond well, and you do not need a diagnosis to start a conversation.
Whether virtual DBT suits you is a clinical question rather than a scheduling one. It is the first thing we look at on a consultation call.
- Chronic suicidal thoughts or self-harm
- Intense, rapidly shifting emotions
- Eating disorders, particularly binge and purge patterns
- Trauma-related emotion dysregulation
- Anxiety and depression that arrive with real intensity
- Relationships that keep ending in the same argument
The delivery changes. The treatment does not.
- Studies comparing the same DBT program in person and by video find comparable results: large symptom reductions in both, with no statistically significant difference between formats.
- The full model transfers, not a stripped-down version. A 12-month trial delivered standard DBT entirely by video, weekly individual therapy plus weekly skills group, with large reductions in symptoms and self-harm.
- Every critical ingredient is kept: the diary card, home practice in your actual life, individual therapy, skills group, and a consultation team behind your therapist.
- The delivery method is the only thing that changes.

Adherent DBT, independently checked.
Our practice director, Dr. Laura Richardson, is certified by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, which means her practice of the model has been independently evaluated for adherence rather than self-declared. She also volunteers on the DBT-LBC board. It is a credential most practices do not hold, and it is the reason we can say our DBT is adherent and point at something when we say it.
Our clinicians are trained in DBT specifically, rather than cross-trained therapists adding a few skills to a general caseload. We run structured skills groups year-round and maintain all four components, including the consultation team, which is the part most practices quietly drop.
Virtual DBT for clients anywhere in New York.
Our practice is based at 522 S. Broad Street, #7, Glen Rock, NJ 07452, and our work with New York clients is virtual. Where you live in the state has no bearing on whether you can get adherent DBT, and a program you attend from home is a great deal easier to hold on to across the months that treatment actually takes.
What people ask before starting virtual DBT.
Can I receive DBT therapy online in New York?
Yes, if you are physically located in New York during your appointments. Sessions run on a secure video platform. Whether virtual DBT is clinically the right fit is a separate question from whether it is available, and it is the one we look at on the consultation call.
What does virtual comprehensive DBT include?
Four things: weekly individual DBT therapy, a weekly DBT skills group, coaching between sessions, and a therapist consultation team supporting your clinician. Coaching is provided as part of the comprehensive program. All four run virtually for adults.
When do the adult DBT skills groups meet?
Both adult skills groups run virtually on Tuesdays, at 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm. They teach the same four modules, so you choose on the basis of your schedule. Enrollment is rolling, and we will confirm which group you can join on the consultation call.
Is a virtual DBT skills group the same as comprehensive DBT?
No. The skills group teaches and practises the four DBT modules and can stand on its own. Comprehensive DBT wraps that group together with individual therapy and coaching between sessions. Our consultation team sits behind both, because it supports the therapist rather than the client, so whoever leads your group has it either way. Neither is the better option in the abstract. The group suits people who want structured skills practice, often alongside therapy they already have. The full program suits people who want the individual work and the skills work joined up.
What if I am in crisis?
Turn the Mind is not a crisis or emergency service, and coaching calls are for help using a skill in the moment rather than for emergency response. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. To reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988, free and available 24 hours a day.
How do I get started?
Book a free 15-minute consultation. We will ask what is going on, what you have tried, and what you are hoping changes, and tell you honestly whether comprehensive DBT, a skills group, or something else is the better fit. If it is a fit, the next step is a fuller assessment with the clinician you would be working with.

You do not need to have anything worked out before you call. Fifteen minutes on the phone is enough for us to tell you whether virtual DBT in New York is the right fit, and to say so if it is not.
