What is Somatic Experiencing (SE)?

Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing is based on the observation that animals in the wild naturally "shake off" the intense energy of a life-threatening event. Humans often override these instincts, which causes that survival energy to stay locked in our bodies, leading to symptoms like:

  • Chronic Anxiety & Panic Attacks

  • Hypervigilance (Always being on guard)

  • Emotional Numbness or Dissociation

  • Chronic Pain and Digestive Issues

How the SE™ Process Works

Somatic Experiencing is a "bottom-up" approach. Instead of starting with the "story" in your mind, we start with the sensations in your body. Martha utilizes three core pillars to ensure your healing is safe and sustainable:

  • Titration: We process the trauma in tiny, manageable "bites" so you never feel overwhelmed.

  • Pendulation: We help your nervous system swing back and forth between a place of tension and a place of calm "resourcing," building your internal strength.

  • Discharge: We allow your body to complete its natural survival responses—such as a small movement, a deep breath, or a change in temperature—to finally release the "stuck" energy.
