Sensorimotor Psychotherapy in Glen Rock, NJ: Healing Beyond Words

When you’ve experienced trauma, your body remembers what your mind may try to forget. You might find yourself struggling with a racing heart, a slumped posture, or a feeling of "frizzing out" that talk therapy alone hasn’t been able to reach. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a body-oriented approach designed to bridge that gap.

At Turn the Mind, we are proud to offer this specialized modality led by Melissa Green-Jackson, LPC, who is Level 1 Certified in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Melissa works with clients in Glen Rock and throughout New Jersey and New York to help them process trauma where it lives: in the nervous system.

Meet Our Specialist: Melissa Green-Jackson, LPC

Melissa Green-Jackson is dually licensed in New Jersey and New York and is specifically trained in the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute’s Level 1: Training in Affect Dysregulation, Survival Defenses, and Traumatic Memory.

Melissa’s expertise allows her to help clients who feel "stuck" in their healing journey. By incorporating SP into her work, she helps you move from simply talking about your trauma to resolving the physical symptoms of PTSD, such as hypervigilance, emotional numbness, and intrusive physical sensations.

What is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, developed by Pat Ogden, is a "bottom-up" therapy. While traditional "top-down" therapies focus on changing thoughts to influence feelings, SP begins with the body’s physical experience.

Trauma often leaves us with "procedural memories"—physical habits like holding our breath, tensing our shoulders, or feeling physically collapsed. Melissa uses SP to help you become mindful of these physical markers, allowing you to safely release trapped survival energy and "re-wire" your body’s response to stress.

How SP Can Help You

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is particularly effective for those who find that talking about their past is too overwhelming or, conversely, leaves them feeling unchanged. Melissa uses SP to help you:

  • Develop Somatic Resources: Find physical "anchors" that help you feel safe in the present moment.

  • Regulate the Nervous System: Learn to stay within your "Window of Tolerance" rather than swinging between panic and shutdown.

  • Complete Survival Responses: Safely allow your body to finish the "fight, flight, or freeze" responses that were interrupted during the traumatic event.
