Inviting Mara to Tea

Updated: Nov 10, 2019

In DBT, we discuss the skill of "Radical Acceptance."  Radical Acceptance includes   Radical Self-Acceptance -- accepting ourselves as human with all of our strengths and weaknesses.  Some things within ourselves are more difficult to accept - our negative emotions, our dark thoughts, anger, jealousies and sadness.  Tara Brach discusses the Buddhist story, 'Inviting Mara to Tea', in which we befriend the negative and dark

parts of ourselves, and accept them.  Instead of avoiding them or pushing them away, we can say 'yes' instead.  And in inviting them to tea, we take away much of our struggle with these thoughts and emotions.  In making friends with these parts of ourselves, we reduce our suffering.
