Our therapists are trained in DBT, CBT and have additional specialty training in one of the following areas: 

trauma and family therapy.

Melissa has more than 15 years of experience in providing therapy and assessment in environments including forensic, inpatient and outpatient.  This experience has given her the breadth and depth to understand complex psychological difficulties. Melissa had her Intensive DBT training with Adam Payne, Ph.D. and Francheska Perepletchikova, Ph.D.  Melissa also specializes in working with clients who have experienced trauma and she is certified in EMDR.   She is also trained in somatic experiencing. She has extensively studied the neurobiology of trauma and trauma treatment.  Melissa works from a CBT perspective, with a focus on DBT.  NJ LPC license #37PC00400000.

Emil Vernarec, LPC, NCC

Therapist

Emil Vernarec specializes in providing Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) for the treatment of depression, various anxiety conditions, and emotional stress associated with difficulties in life. As an extension of CBT, he incorporates evidence-based techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and compassion-focused methods. Emil has worked in community mental health settings and in a six-week intensive outpatient program at a large medical center. He has completed advanced workshops at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy and is a member of the New Jersey Association of Cognitive-Behavior Therapists.  NJ LPC License #37PC00431700

Miriam Weinberg, Psy.D.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Weinberg attended Barnard College in NYC for undergraduate work and obtained her Psy.D. from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology in the Bronx.  She has extensive experience with CBT, with a focus on children, adolescents, families.   Dr. Weinberg had her DBT Intensive training with Adam Payne, Ph.D. and Francheska Perepletchikova, Ph.D.  She loves group work and is a natural addition to our team.  She focuses on teaching emotional regulation, adaptive problem solving, interpersonal, and cognitive coping skills.  Dr. Weinberg is a postdoctoral fellow with a temporary permit in psychology practicing under the supervision of Dr. Richardson.  TP #193-080

LAURA RICHARDSON, PH.D., MBA

Director

Dr. Richardson is the executive director of Turn the Mind, LLC, and leads the intensively-trained DBT Team offering all modes of DBT.  Dr. Richardson obtained her certification in DBT from the Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC™). Dr. Richardson was a Principal Clinical Psychologist at Essex County Hospital Center, a county in-patient psychiatric hospital in northern New Jersey where she was the Project Director of the DBT program. She is a continuing education reviewer for Behavior Tech, LLC (the company that teaches DBT).   Dr. Richardson has additional training in DBT including an additional Advanced DBT intensive with Charlie Swenson, M.D. and Kelly Koerner, Ph.D., training with Jill Rathus, Ph.D. and Alec Miller, Ph.D. for adolescent DBT, and training with Alan Fruzetti, Ph.D. on adolescent and family DBT.  She has taken DBT Prolonged Exposure, an evidence-based treatment delivered within the DBT framework.  Further, Dr. Richardson is certified in EMDR. Dr. Richardson has extensive couples experience using Imago and DBT Couples work.  For treating panic disorder, general anxiety, perfectionism and other anxiety-related issues, Dr. Richardson has been doing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for more than a decade.  Dr. Richardson was a founding member and clinical advisory board member for Emotions Matter, Inc., an advocacy and education non-profit for people living with Borderline Personality Disorder and their families. Dr. Richardson previously served on the New Jersey Psychological Association’s Ethics Education and Resource Committee.  (NJ License#: 35SI00480300 and NY License#: 018389).
